How I Stay On Budget

Writer's picture: AngelaAngela

One of the biggest myths about budgeting is you have to make or have a certain amount of money in order to budget. Which is not completely true. You are required to manage what you have well to prepare for what is to come.

As your Breakthrough Bestie, I want to share a few of the ways I stay on track with my budget & what I do when I overspend in an area.

TIP #1: Meal Prepping

This is an easy way to stay on track with your budget AND nutrition goals. You'd be surprised at how packing a protein bar or cooking your proteins for the week on the weekends can save you 30-45 mins a day AND keep you from having to think about what's for dinner.

TIP #2: Remove Saved Payments

This tip has been a game changer for me. Just the other night I was scrolling and wanted to purchase something. Because I have removed my credit card info from my saved payment methods in my phone, I had to get out of bed to purchase that item.

Needless to say…I didn’t get it. And this morning, I am re-thinking if I actually “need/want” it.

Try this tip and see if it helps you stay on target or at least keep you from spending unnecessarily.

TIP #3: Wait a minute...

If you struggle with impulse shopping this will help you. Leave the item in your cart for 48 hours before you purchase. But what if you didn’t budget for it?

If you don’t have it in the budget and decide you had to have it, the money has to come from a sinking fund and not a credit card.

TIP #4: Black Out Days

While creating my budget I choose days where I plan NOT to spend money unnecessarily.

💰My blackout days don't include bills, or groceries, or the things I’ve budgeted for- just everything else.

💰blackout days help me with keeping impulse & emotional spending in check.

🎯 I’m honest with myself and set realistic goals. Over time, I’ve also created a discipline where I can go weeks without spending money on stuff I honestly don’t need. (In the beginning I only had two blackout days a month)

🚫 There's no "set* rules!

Black out days can be whenever you want them to be and can be focused on a particular area. If spending too much on coffee is what you want to focus on, then try a no coffee on black out days instead!

Life happens, so what happens when you overspend and need to get back on track?

Give yourself 30 days to pay yourself back and replace the money you didn’t budget to spend.

This method has been my consistent way of managing my budget for the past 3 years. And what I have found is, most times, if I have to pay myself back, I don't overspend.

It's breakthrough season!
